The program design will be for 4 two and a half day sessions, three intercessions and an alumni learning network. The program and topics will be as follows:
Onsite Session One: Leadership and Use of Self: During this 2 and a half day session, participants will be introduced to the entire Institute experience, including the expected outcomes from the experience. Participants will be encouraged to explore their own leadership skills and needs, and thorough lecture, discussion, self assessment and evaluation, will begin to develop a plan for their personal leadership development. Prior to this seminar, participants will complete the 360-degree assessment instruments. These will be used in this seminar and throughout the Institute to match leadership strategies to individuals. Topics for lecture, discussion and activities during this seminar include introduction to leadership concepts, with specific concentration on the use and development of self in leading others. Onsite Session Two: Organizational Leadership: Session two will move from development of self as leader to organizational leadership development. In this session, participants will gain the tools needed to impact change within organizations undergoing sweeping change. Through organizational analysis, participants will begin to plan for the implementation and evaluation of local nurse retention strategies in their home institutions. Intercession Two: Local
Leadership in Action: Planning and Implementation: During intercession
two, participants will continue their personal leadership development,
and will now begin to practice those leadership skills through implementation
of a creative, organization specific nurse retention program in their
home institution. In addition to continuing
to engage in self-evaluation via the Friday 5s, and work with their
mentor, participants will now begin to mentor others.

Onsite Session Three: Leadership Challenges: During session three, participants will continue their leadership development by applying their knowledge to the leadership challenges of advocacy. Advocacy at the local, professional, and legislative level will be discussed as a leadership strategy. During this session, implications of policy making at the macro (legislative) level will be analyzed, and participants will have the opportunity to observe the legislative process in action at the WV Legislature. Visits with a variety of stakeholders including representatives of health care organizations, health care lobbyists, legislators, and legislative staff will facilitate opportunities for participants to influence policy direction. Intercession three: Local Leadership in Action: Evaluation: During intercession three, participants will continue their leadership development, will begin to analyze the local impact of their nurse retention initiative, and will develop a plan for dissemination of their initiative. They will attend one live webcast on a leadership topic provided by Institute faculty. They will begin to work with a mentor, and will continue to mentor a HSTA student interested in nursing.
